Located in the Columbia River just downstream of Mosier, Oregon and approximately four miles east of Hood River at River Mile 174 is an island which is often referred to as Chicken Charlie's Island. Eighteen Mile Island gained this name from the man who resided on the island from 1915 until his death in 1963. Apparently Charles Reither preferred the seclusion of this river island to life ashore. It is believed that he raised chickens on the island, thus "Chicken Charlie's Island". There is one house located on the island. It has been for sale at different times during the past 15 years. You can best view this island when you are driving west on I84 from Mosier to Hood River.
