The Columbia River Gorge is a region located in both Oregon and Washington divided by the Columbia River. It starts just past Troutdale which is east of Portland and continues about 85 miles. Stevenson, Washington

I took this picture the other day near Rock Creek Cove in Stevenson, Wa. I love the mix of sunlight and sky with the reflection of hills on the water. Stevenson is a quaint small town to visit in the Columbia River Gorge. It is home to the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center, The Skamania Lodge, and the nearby Bonneville Dam. Eighteen Mile Island

eighteen mile islandLocated in the Columbia River  just downstream of Mosier, Oregon and approximately four miles east of Hood River at River Mile 174 is an island which is often referred to as Chicken Charlie's IslandEighteen Mile Island gained this name from the man who resided on the island from 1915 until his death in 1963.  Apparently Charles Reither preferred the seclusion of this river island to life ashore. It is believed that he raised chickens on the island, thus "Chicken Charlie's Island".  There is one house located on the island. It has been for sale at different times during the past 15 years. You can best view this island when you are driving west on I84 from Mosier to Hood River.

Will My Property Taxes Go Up With This Purchase Price

One of the most common questions an out of state buyer has when purchasing a home in Oregon is; will the taxes go up with this purchase price?  Oregon property taxes have little to do with the sales price (unless it is new construction until assessment). 

In Oregon you will have an assessed value which is much different from your RMV (Real Market Value) - the assessed value can only increase 3% per year.  This does not mean your taxes will increase 3% per year - there are other factors in our property tax amount. 

The better question for a buyer to ask is - what have the voters approved for increases - bonds, budgets and the likes will raise your taxes faster than the assessed value.  For more information see - Central Oregon Real Estate

Hood River Historic Homes & Walking Tour

These are some of the many Historic Homes in Hood River. I especially love the house with the large white columns. It is located on a dead end st. on the east end of town not far from the May St. Elementary School.  For a nice walk, starting downtown on State St. go up the stairs by the Memorial Fountain and Horsefeathers, through Stratton Gardens, up the 2nd st. stairs all sections to Montello at the top. Continue west on Montello passing many of the beautiful historic Hood River homes. At 9th turn North just past Waucoma Park down the steps then past the Children's Park and continue to State St. I try and walk this loop at least once a week and never tire of the scenery.
